24th Annual Allen Ginsberg Poetry Competition

April is National Poetry Month and in recognition of this month long celebration, VSAarts RI and the Arc of Blackstone Valley will present the 24th Annual Allen Ginsberg Poetry Competition on May 28th, from 6-8pm at Independence Square, 500 Prospect St., Pawtucket, RI.

This contest is open to all adults with intellectual and development disabilities and provides a great opportunity to showcase one’s creative writing talents!

This year, the theme is “Celebrating 25 Years of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).” The ADA was passed in 1990 and was (and still is) a landmark piece of legislation ensuring equal rights for individuals with disabilities. We hope that writers will think about how this law impacted individuals with diverse abilities and disabilities and whether this law reduced barriers or opened new doors.

The passage of this law took the hard work of many individuals and activists with disabilities. We hope this year’s contributors will communicate how their world has evolved and changed over the years, thanks to the passage of the ADA.
